How did we test the French?
Each model got the same request, in French, with no other instruction: write a three-sentence email to a client to move a meeting from Tuesday to Thursday, same time, in a cordial tone, using vous. We sent it three times to each model on 19 October 2026 and kept every answer.
A script scores each answer on five checks, one point each. The checks are deterministic: the same answer always gets the same score. They test French form, not meaning, so we also read every answer ourselves.
Access: Claude Sonnet and Claude Haiku, the two model families of Claude Free, through Claude Code with a one-line system prompt (“You are a helpful assistant.”). Gemini through the Gemini API free tier, model gemini-flash-lite-latest, which answered as Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite, the free app's model. Neither went through the free app itself, which adds its own instructions.

- Vous. It uses vous all the way through, never tu.
- 3 sentences. The message has exactly three sentences. The subject line, the greeting, the sign-off and any note after it are not counted.
- Lower-case days. Days are in lower case: mardi, jeudi, unless one opens a sentence.
- French punctuation. A space before ? ! : ; and French quotation marks « », never English ones.
- No anglicism. No English word such as meeting, call, slot, planning or update.
What did each model answer?
Every answer, as returned, with its score. Two Claude Sonnet answers added a note after the signature; the checks ignore it.

- Claude Haiku: 15 of 15. Every answer had three sentences, vous, lower-case days and French spacing.
- Claude Sonnet: 14 of 15. Its third answer ran to four sentences.
- Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite: 13 of 15. One answer used planning, one had two sentences, and the first asked the client to move the meeting instead of announcing the move: a meaning error the checks cannot see.
Which tools could we not test, and why?
- ChatGPT Free. On 12 October chatgpt.com answered our automated browser with HTTP 403. On 19 October GPT-6 Luna, its free model, was refused to our ChatGPT account through the Codex CLI (“not supported when using Codex with a ChatGPT account”).
- Mistral Vibe Free (formerly Le Chat). We have no Mistral account or API key on the fleet; we did not open one for this test.
- Duck.ai. Duck.ai was “temporarily unavailable” on 12 October. On 19 October we asked Gemma 4 31B, one of its models, through the Gemini API: four HTTP 500 errors in a row.
- Microsoft Copilot (free). copilot.microsoft.com asked us to sign in before the first message on 12 October.
Tested and not retained for writing
Gemini 3.5 Flash-Lite stays our pick for speaking, because Gemini Live is in the free plan, but not for writing: 13 of 15 and one answer that reversed the request. Gemma 4 31B, which Duck.ai serves, gave no answer to test.
Which free AI fits how you use French?
Three questions if you are learning French, five if you write in it. A writer is sent to the best-tested tool unless an answer rules it out: a European data rule removes the American tools, confidential information removes Gemini, heavy daily use favours the largest free text allowance.

How can you test an AI's French yourself?
Paste the prompt into any tool, then give its answer one point per check. Four or five is good enough for routine French; below that, reread every output before you send it.
Which free tools help you learn French?
If you came to learn French rather than to write it, these are free, and none is an app trial in disguise. We checked that they open and what they offer; we did not take their courses.
- TV5MONDE Apprendre le français (TV5 MONDE SAS, Paris, France). A free site with more than 2,000 online exercises built on videos and news reports, from A1 to B2, plus a level test.
- RFI Le français facile (France Médias Monde, Paris, France). Podcasts and exercises for every level, with transcripts and a level test; it opened without an account when we checked.
- Duolingo (Duolingo, USA). “Learn a language for free”: short lessons adapted to your level. Super Duolingo is the paid tier, with a one-week free trial.
A general assistant as a tutor. Gemini Live, ChatGPT and Claude all offer voice on their free plan. Start with: “Be my French teacher. Speak slowly at A2 level, one question at a time, and correct my mistakes at the end of each answer.” The tutor will not grade you against a syllabus; TV5MONDE and RFI do.
Does data handled by Mistral Vibe always stay in Europe?
No. Mistral AI is a French company registered in Paris, and its privacy policy picks EU providers first, but it uses non-EU ones “in exceptional cases” under Standard Contractual Clauses, and your inputs can train its models unless you opt out in your account. We have not tested Vibe's French.
FAQ
What is the best free AI in French?
On our test, Claude Free: Claude Haiku passed 15 of 15 checks and Claude Sonnet 14 of 15 on the same French email request, three runs each, on 19 October 2026. Gemini's free model scored 13 of 15. ChatGPT and Mistral were not tested.
Is ChatGPT good in French?
We could not test it: chatgpt.com blocked our automated browser on 12 October, and its free model was refused to our account on 19 October. Its free plan has the largest stated text allowance. Run the five checks above before you rely on it.
Can I use a free AI in French without an account?
Yes: ChatGPT works without signing in and Duck.ai needs no account. Claude and Gemini need an account, and Copilot asked us to sign in.
Will my French conversations train the model?
It depends on a setting: ChatGPT until you turn off “Improve the model for everyone”, Claude only with Model Improvement on, Mistral unless you opt out. Duck.ai says it does not train on chats.
Which free AI helps me learn French?
For structured learning, TV5MONDE's free exercises from A1 to B2. To practise speaking, Gemini Live in the free Gemini app, with a teacher instruction at the start.
Using AI in French across a team?
Once several people reuse the outputs, the question becomes who reviews them and which data may go in. AI Jungle sets up and runs agents for owner-led firms, with a named person approving what goes out.
